Kevin W. Ryan, JD, MA

Associate Director for Law and Legal Policy

 

Associate Professor, Health Policy and Management; Assistant Dean for MPH Programs; and Co-Director DrPH Program in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health

 

Kevin Ryan is an attorney and health services researcher whose academic interests center around public health law and the development of state and federal policies targeted to improve the U.S. health care delivery and financing system. His current activities include serving as Associate Director at the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement (ACHI). At ACHI, he has served as the Principal Investigator and Project Director of the Arkansas State Health Insurance Expansion Initiative, a $2.5 million-grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to study mechanisms for addressing the status of the uninsured in Arkansas and the State Coverage Initiative, a $1.5 million-grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to design and implement mechanisms to expand health insurance coverage and promote stabilization of the health care marketplace. He has directed and served as a team member for numerous projects and initiatives providing policy and legal expertise.

 

Professor Ryan is a member of the faculty of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Public Health (COPH) with appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management. His classroom responsibilities include master and doctoral level courses including Public Health Law and Ethics, American Health Care Reform, Introduction to Health Policy and Introduction to Clinical Medicine. In 2005, Ryan received the Chancellor's Faculty Teaching Award for "Outstanding Teaching in the College of Public Health." He was also honored by the COPH Student Council with an Outstanding Faculty Award. He is an adjunct faculty member at the UALR Williams H. Bowen School of Law where he teaches Public Health Law.

 

He is the Assistant Dean for MPH programs, Co-Director of the UAMS COPH DrPH Program and serves as a Co-Associate Editor of Health Promotion Practice (a peer reviewed professional journal of the Society of Public Health Education). In addition, Professor Ryan is an adjunct faculty member at the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law.

 

Professor Ryan graduated with High Honors from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. He has a Master of Arts in Health Services Management from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. Clinical degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology from UAMS and an Associate of Science in Registered Nursing from UALR.  Ryan is the designated Grand Marshall of the 2010 and 2011 UAMS Commencement Ceremonies. He is a recipient of the Squibb, Mallinkrodt, and Vickie Lynn Ables Awards.

 

Professor Ryan is a long time resident of central Arkansas and enjoys current events, politics and travel.
