Joy Rockenbach (standing), a Project Director at ACHI, facilitated a
one-dayObesity Leadership Summit held at the Arkansas Education
Television Network in Conway, Arkansas. The meeting was structured
to give voice to concerns about obesity issues in Arkansas. The summit
was funded in part by a grant from the National Center on Outreach.
At ACHI, Rockenbach is responsible for planning and directing the
component of Act 1220 of 2003, which mandated a Body Mass Index
assessment of every public school student in the state. The project
is currently in its third year.

Shirley Tyson, ACHI Policy Specialist, and Dr. Charles Beets, Work Unit
Leader for Communicable Disease/Immunization at the Arkansas
Department of Health (ADH), presented at the Arkansas Legislature’s
Joint Interim Committees on Public Health, Welfare & Labor on June 22. 
They discussed a report detailing the state’s immunization exemptions 
among school children.

Dr.Joe Thompson of Little Rock as the state's chief health officer


ACHI’s Kevin Ryan Receives 2005 Outstanding
Faculty Award from COPH Student Council


ACHI Associate Director Kevin Ryan participated in a press conference
on May 2 to kick off Cover the Uninsured Week in Arkansas. The event
was organized by Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families to
highlight the fact that more than 450,000 children and adults in Arkansas
without health insurance.  “Those who have chronic conditions are often
the most vulnerable in our society,” Ryan said. “We owe it to the millions
of uninsured Americans and Arkansas residents to do everything we can
to see that they get the health care they need.”  Also speaking at the
press conference were state lawmakers, representatives of the the
medical community, and health officials.

The two manned an exhibit to promote the understanding of Act 1220
and Rockenbach made three presentations at the conference.  
The conference was held on December 1 at the Statehouse
Convention Center in Little Rock
